I’ve just treated myself to some new books. Now, before you think I’m being self-indulgent again, I have to say that contrary to what this blog suggests, I actually don’t buy that many books. (I freely admit that I may have borrowed more books from my theological college library than most though!) This latest is … Continue reading »

Leadership’s price
J. Oswald Sanders in his classic book, ‘Spiritual Leadership’, writes If a Christian is not willing to rise early and work late, to expend greater effort in diligent study and faithful work, that person will not change a generation. Fatigue is the price of leadership. Mediocrity is the result of never getting tired.
Reseeding the church
I’m halfway through yet another book. Sometimes I think that reference of Ortberg’s to half-read books everywhere (see my hurrysickness post) was written to describe my house! I don’t even know how my husband can bear the fact that in virtually every room there is a book propped open. I claim to be reading them all. … Continue reading »
Today and tomorrow…
From ‘The Emerging Christian Way’ (ed. Schwartzentruber), quoting Peter Pitzele… Today and tomorrow the Bible will need teachers who are passionate as well as literate, savvy as well as scholarly, street-wise as well as bookwise, and who can, without degrading it, make the Bible come alive as living myth, relevant, disturbing, and still capable of … Continue reading »
Scars
Scars are the authenticating marks of faithful discipleship and true spiritual leadership. …a thought from J. Oswald Sanders in ‘Spiritual Leadership’.
The form of every virtue at the testing point
A long title for this post, I know. But it’s half of one of those quotable quotes which sticks with me. Courage is not simply one of the virtues but the form of every virtue at the testing point. (C.S. Lewis) It’s something Phil Pringle writes about in his book ‘You The Leader’. I have to … Continue reading »
Getting munched (Luke 10 still!)
This Luke 10 experiment is kind of interesting. If you’ve only recently started to follow my blog, look for the post entitled ‘Re-entering the Biblical narrative – for real’ and that’ll give you some background to the experiment. I’m still going with the experiment. I’m finding that the beauty of reading and rereading a text … Continue reading »
Lazy leadership…?
I’m not getting through Roxburgh and Romanuk’s ’The missional leader’ very fast at all here. That’s mostly because I could blog something from every page they write nearly! Here’s another thought… Beginning with the lived experience, a congregation cultivates its participation in the emergence of the missional imagination. Participation does not mean involvement in something already … Continue reading »
Are you hurrysick?
I like this word. A lot. It is a word which means what it says. I don’t know who coined it but Ortberg uses it in ‘The Life You’ve Always Wanted’. It describes the drive within us relentlessly to pursue more and more – more success, more things crammed into less time. We have fallen victim to … Continue reading »
Luke 10:1-12…still living in this text!
I’m still there. It feels like months in this text but is probably not even two weeks! But things are changing a little. As I read it again, I’m no longer reading it in the same way. My historico-critical faculty is dulled (which. on some occasions and for some purposes, may well be good). Instead, … Continue reading »
